Transfer Weights in Weight Paint mode does not work #47093

System Information
Windows 7, no graphics card, Intel i5 4460 3.2ghz

Blender Version
Broken: 2.76

Can not add clothes to rigged model.

cntl + p parents clothes to rig, verified in outliner window. Then tried to transfer weights from model mesh to clothes and nothing. Uses 'all layers' as suggested in tutorials and documentation, several times, but nothing. Moved the model in pose mode and came right out of clothes. Does weight transfer only work in object mode?

Also, when I move rig in prose mode it moves model in object mode and pose mode, but edit mode model is not attached to model mesh.

Model rigged1 pole targets working with robe on.blend

  1. parent clothes to rig:
select clothes, select rig, cntl + p, select set parent to armature deform with empty groups
  2. weight paint mode, select model mesh, select clothes, click transfer weights button, select all layers in "destination", click transfer weights button again, go into pose mode and move model.
    Result: model goes through clothes.

I searched transfer weights in 2.76 manual and didn't get anything. Both tutorials worked. It seems too simple not to work.

Thanks you for looking at this. I will definitely make a donation if I get this problem resolved. I can't have a naked model in the game I'm making. I'm kinda stuck right now. Fixing this is the final step in getting my model into my game.

Thanks for helping me on this one.

This is not a bug report, please seek user support on user forums like blenderartists.org or blender.stackexchange.com.

You do not need to “click transfer weights button again”, when changing things in operator panel operator is undone/redone with new setting automatically.

Here transfer weight is working as expected with your .blend file, could also be some issue in official 2.76, please always check latest build from our buildbot before making a report.

In my experience, it seems to me this is still broken in all new versions including 2.79. I'm having the same issue, an old Blender version worked just fine for transfer weights for me and the new versions do not. If you search for "loose clothing weight paint transfer tool Blender", you'll come across this link: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/34719718/transferring-rig-weights-from-one-mesh-to-another-in-blender-2-76. He says it is broken in all newer versions as well and I have to concur. I haven't had the best success using his data transfer modifier to do what the weight transfer tool is supposed to do and I've done it many times and tinkered with it for awhile now. I'm simply going to try downloading an older version of Blender and try using that and compare my results. But it would be nice that, as many people are experiencing that if this is broken, that it can be looked at and fixed since I really don't want to switch to old Blender versions and transfer helps people make clothing which is a very large and important function that needs to work well.

You're saying there is nothing wrong though? I will keep searching but I'll let you know this whole problem has been quite an ordeal to figure out and I've already spent a few months trying to figure out how to make a character I have with a cloak, move in a way that there are no intersections. I've had some successes but it's hard to get both meshes to deform with one another nicely and the only recourse I've found is doing everything manually.

Can this please be investigated? Thanks!

This is most definitely a bug. I am also having the exact same issue. Even worse I can't even access the operator panel when i do attempt to transfer the weights. This has been a long going issue for me and I have sought the help from many. They all tell me the same thing. Which makes this a software problem. Please look into this bug and resolve.

The only bug is that the operator says that it transfers from the active to selected meshes but it actually transfers from the selected mesh to the active mesh. Apart from that I could successfully transfer weights in 2.79 master (selecting the human mesh, selecting the clothes, going to weight paint mode, then Transfer Weights using source: by name and destination: all layers.
