System Information
Operating system and graphics card
win 7 gtx 550ti

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.69.7 4b206af, see splash screen) 9adf4cb
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
In the .blend file i have a model (Joe big head) that render hair well with shift+z but when render with F12 hair is broken.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps

Background info: This model was made in Blender 2.6 series and in today's build i just combed the hair, rigged Joe, merge 2 vertices.

With the attached .blend render with shift+z you will see that hair is rendering well. Now render with F12 the hair just drops. Go to the view port do undo ctrl+z the hair is back together.

Sigh… Can confirm the issue (in fact, it even crashes here for me). Problem is, particles are in heavily broken state (beyond any hope of repair), and all bandages we put on it tend to break existing data. So would really recommend not trying to use complex psys from older versions, you have high probability of breakage. Especially with that 'use modifier stack' nightmare option.

But even with deletion and creation of brand new system I can confirm rendering breaks things. The problem is due to the fact you do not have same modifier stack in 3DView 'real time' mode and render mode (in fact, your subsurf modifier is only enabled for render), this totally breaks edited hair particles. Nothing to do here really, would just consider this a known limitation of current system, only workaround is either to not 'use modifier stack', or to ensure your modifier stack produces the same topology (number and order of faces, to simplify) in realtime and rendertime modes.

The workaround worked great i just enabled subdivision modifier in 3d view, edit hair and comb again. it works well
Thanks this page is worth bookmarking or linking to the manual. When i have time i will check the manual
