Right and Left Views ... swapped #48563

opened 2016-06-01 11:40:19 +02:00 by Luca Crisi · 21 comments

System Information
Windows 8.1, 64 bit
nVidia GT 740

Blender Version
Broken: 2.77 (all I have memory of)
Worked: none that I recall

Short description of error
The Right and Left Views are swapped.
The Right side of the scene appears in the Left View and vice-versa

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps
Trying to set the reference images for a mesh, I always have to assign the Left reference image to the Right view and vice-versa.
This is really annoying.

Here are some screenshots and a test file (no references, I used Text labels, to limit the file size)

Front View (so far so good)
Front.png

Left View (it shows the right side of the scene)

Right View (it shows the left side of the scene)

You are mixing left and right (in your front view, Left is on the right side, and vice-versa)…

NO, Bastien.
I guess you are mixing Back and Front.

If I look you into your face (Front View), your Right Eye is in the black part of your face and your Left Eye is in the Red part of your face.

This is a Human Face, seen in the Front View.

The open eye is the Right one.
The closed eye is the Left one.

Blender isn't only used for modelling human faces. What are the left/right sides of book, computer screen or washing machine?

With this file you can see it better.

Hit 3 (Right View), and you will see the Left Side (closed eye)
Hit Ctrl+3 (Left View), and you will see the Right Side (open eye)

So, if you look at a Car in the Front View, and its Front Right lamp is broken, would you say that its Front Left* one is broken?
Really?

Don't Things also have a Right and a Left side?
I hope you are joking.

What I'm saying is that what is considered to be the left and right side depends on the type of object and how humans are usually positioned relative to those objects. Human bodies, bikes and cars have different left/right sides relatively to the front side compared to books, computer screens and washing machines.

Blender is not going to do some computer vision analysis to figure out which type of object you are modelling.

Another example: A Computer

allen-park-laptop-screen-repair.jpg

On the Left side of the screen, you can see a hole.
On the Right side (still close to the center) of the body you find the Touchpad.

Of course, the Left eye of the observer (or the creative) is located at the right side of the object.
And vice-versa.

But I'm expecting that when I model something I'm seeing its right/left sides, not mine.

So...
Don't you agree that an airplane has a front, a back, a left wing and a right wing?
Don't you agree that an car has a front, a back, a left door and a right door?

And so for everything.

Did you see the computer screen image I posted?

Don't you agree that it has a hole in its Left side?

books, computer screens and washing machines. also have a left and a right side, when you watch them in the Front View.

For instance, this washing machine

231906674.jpg

Has a beautiful display near its Left side.
And the Samsung Logo near its Right side.

Well, they are actually in the Front side, but imagine they were on the corresponding sides.

If you were playing to be an airplane...
Wouldn't your Left wing be your Left arm?

Not for Blender.
Blender would make it with your Right arm.

Another example is this WebCam.
Let's say you'd like to remake this in Blender by using some reference images you found (or you shot them).

logitech_pro-900-=webcam.jpg

You can see it has a notable asymmetry.
In Blender, you need to swap the Side reference images and us the Left one for the Right side and vice-versa.

Talking about computers...

Come_scegliere_un_case_per_PC_computer.png

This one has a transparent window on its Right side (since the Front side is the side with the DVD drive and the I/O ports).
It doesn't take any image anlysis tool to make Blender simply NOT SWAP between Left and Right.

This is last warning: please STOP spamming this site, it’s a tool to report BUGS, not to try to convince the whole world your vision of things is correct. If you want to have philosophical debate about what’s right and left sides, you have user forums and such.

@mont29

1 - It's not my vision, but an horrendous logical bug.
2 - I'm not spamming. Just answering @brecht.
3 - This is a Blender bug, not philisophy
