Blender crashes related to Nvidia driver #49209

System Information
Windows 8.1 64-bit with a Nvidia GeForce GT 750m

Blender Version
Blender 2.77a

Every now and then Blender crashes and the system informs that the driver stopped working correctly.

Then, if I try to open Blender again it shows an error message saying that it can't detect 3D hardware accelerated driver.

However, if I restart the pc everything works just fine.

Also, it's not always like this. Even a few days ago I spent more then an hour working with Blender and everything went smoothly.

Today, in about 5 minutes this happened. As it has happened two seperate times before.

The driver in question is 368.69

Hi, this sounds like a driver timeout problem. Check for newest driver and/or check: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/increase-time-out-limit/e979e2ad-e15f-450b-9818-a148cbf01078?auth=1 Mib

Try to isolate what the problem is.

If you used the same exact Blender few days ago and it worked fine back then and now it doesn't work anymore the odds would be that it's not a Blender bug.

Make sure you're using NVidia driver installed from their site (try re-installing it, even installing same exact version might help). The issue here is that windows update sometimes touches .dll which are used by NVidia driver.

Also, while Blender might crash it can't affect on the system. So the fact that after crash the GPU can't be detected indicates something involved from driver/OS.

And indeed follow @mib2berlin suggestions as well.

If that all doesn't help, try to isolate steps which reporoduces the bug in 100% of cases. That would be the only way we can troubleshoot the problem.

Ok, thank you for the replies.

One of the times was when I switched from Blender Render to Cycles Render. Yesterday I never touched any GPU related settings on Blender, I was just going through the user settings when the crash happened. But in between I've used Blender a few times without any problem which is weird.

I found some people who had crashes on other Nvidia cards using other software who report that their crashes might be related to the pc being connected to a second monitor.

I also read that if you're on a laptop you shouldn't update the drivers unless you have a problem. It was the first time I read something like that. Is that true? I thought that could be the problem and that maybe I should rollback to the default driver.

So, given this, should I maybe rollback instead of re-installing this driver/install new ones?

Yes, sometimes newest driver adds new issues that were not in older one (especially true when your GPU starts to be a bit old), so you can try reverting your driver to an older version (or check if a newer one fixes it).

In any case, we can’t do much about drivers, thanks for the report, but will archive it for now.
