Using range sliders causes crashes 2.78 #49433

System Information
Windows 8.1, AMD Sapphire 7700 HD
Blender Version
2.78
Worked: (optional)

Using sliders caused random crashes in the software.

This most notably happen when using the particle systems "Clump Noise Size", but also happened repeatedly when adjusting lamp settings. as well as other sliders, interestingly it doesn't seem to occur if you click and enter in the adjust amounts manually.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

Hard to do as it was random for me but -

  1. create sphere
  2. create isosphere
  3. create particles on sphere using the isosphere as the rendered object
  4. turn on children and adjust clump noise size
  5. crash

For the sun slider -

  1. created ANT landscape
  2. created light and set to sun
  3. looked through camera in rendered mode
  4. adjusted range slider to decrease light
  5. crash

Please always attach .blend file which is required to reproduce the error, even when it's simple one. There might be some setting in your startup file which is crucial for bug to be reproduced..

Some extra questions:

  • Does it happen with CPU or GPU rendering?
  • If you was testing GPU, try using CPU and see if blender still crashed.
  • Does it happen in previous release?

stars.blend

  • Happens in CPU rendering.
  • Hasn't happened in previous release, in fact using the UI felt a lot more responsive. (if that made any sense!)

I can't get this file to crash, but it's also not clear what the exact steps are here? There's compositor nodes open, so is it related to that?

Maybe this will help -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnGO7CMGU3s&feature=youtu.be

I screen capped me crashing blender 2.78 in more or less the same way with a simple cube in cycles render (sorry its not the best upload but I've only just got back from work - it seems to only happen if the 3d viewport is set to render as you adjust the range slider and in the case I capped adding a new material, if you watch to the end - this doesn't happen with 2.77

Thanks for the video, but even with those steps i can't reproduce the error. Some more questions:

  • Does it happen with factory settings? (File -> Load Factory Settings)
  • Does it still happen with latest builds from builder.blender.org?
