Blender 2.78a has an issue where one can see some wireframe z fighting only when matcap shading is enabled.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
1 - default cube scene
2 - Add sphere
3 - Subdivide N amounts
4 - Apply smooth shading
5 - Enable any matcap
6 - profit of the limited bug ;)

This could be a driver / specific gpu related issue.

Did you try to run with Blender software OpenGL?

Does enabling the Viewport AO produce any artifacts (like moire patterns bellow - screenshot from a system running an AMD 760G) ?

Does changing the Selection type in User Preferences > System have any impact on showing artifacts?

Sorry for the late reply.

It seems it was a driver related issue.
I renewed the required libraries to a far newer collection thanks to this PPA
