The Mesh Cache modifier is broken in Windows.

It flags the output folder as "Permission denied" when I know it is writeable.

Tried it on Blender 2.78and 2.78aon both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Tried running Blender 'As Administrator' = no avail.
Attached is file I need to cache. rope02.blend
but have set up new files from scratch, all have same behaviour.

Not an area I frequently use, and couldn't figure it out based on your ticket.

After opening the file, what exact steps (clicks/keystrokes) do I need to take to reproduce this?

  1. Open Blender 2.78/a in Windows 7 or 10
  2. Add some mesh
optional 3) Add and animate a mesh deformation modifier (say.. Simple deform)
  3. Add a Mesh Cache modifier on top of that stack.
  4. In Mesh Cache modifier properties, enter the folder for cache output, and make sure that the folder is writeable.
  5. Observe the modifier says that folder is "Permission denied"

Sorry, I answered in haste with a complete workflow.

Using Windows when you open the file I originally attached, jump straight to step 5.
You'll see that no matter what folder you set for output, it is Permission denied.

not my area of expertise, but by the looks of it, the Mesh Cache is an operator for reading a cache, not writing it (it needs an pc2 or mdd file), so if you're telling it to read a directory as an input file, the permission denied isn't that strange.

Ah .... that's it.
I had it all wrong.

I was expecting to export from the modifier, when I should look to export from the File/Export menu.

This Permission denied is related to INPUT, not OUTPUT.

My bad, & many apologies.
A major malfunction at the "keyboard to monitor interface"
