Blender Version
Broken: 930186d (nightly build). Also all earlier versions have this error
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
exporting instance groups to alembic results in empties with no geometry - when

exporting "selected objects only"
original objects is in a hidden layer and exporting "visible layers only"

This will result in an alembic with only empties and no geo.

This works though:
If exporting selected, with both original objects and instance group selected, the alembic file will contain the original objects + an empty with duplicates of the original objects parented to the empty.

if linking a group from an external blender file and exporting that instance group, the resulting alembic will result in an empty with original objects parented to that empty.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps

  1. create some objects
  2. group those objects
  3. create an instance object of the latest created group
  4. select instance object and export as alembic with "selected objects only"
  5. open a new blend file and import the alembic. Only empties can be seen.

Event Timeline

tested on latest nightly build 7359cc1

When exporting a instance group as alembic with "selected objects only" now results in an "empty" file. When I import the abc to blender nothing is imported. Not even empties are imported (as before)
