Crashes on launch of blender.exe (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION)
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Dbl click on blender.exe desktop icon, program starts, displays cmd window, then crashes (never see UI/splash).
I tried using --factory-startup, and the opengl32.dll-in-blender-folder-trick, no luck. I suspect its a video driver problem - I can't get recent drivers for my older laptop (2011?). Using 2.78a version mostly works - it starts up and I can create new .blend files - the only thing that didn't work with that version is it couldn't load your demo blend files (from your website), nor could I display the "System" tab in "User Pref" - both would result in a crash. clinfo.exe (from ATI) also crashes on load.
From the cmd line:
blender.exe --factory-startup --debug-cycles

I was looking to upgrade my blender using choco packages. After upgrading to 2.78 I get
Error: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, strange the app still is on disk and even the downloaded msi it seems.
I would like to understand and help with resolution of this bug if possible.
Thanks.

@davehorner Seriously! Please:
So considering your case cleared.
@michael2000
That means you have a serious GPU driver issue, we cannot really help here, if even basic diagnostic tool from very vendor of the GPU crashes…
Not being able to update the drivers is also not good news, but it’s a bit strange that it still crashes with software OpenGL. I would infer from your crash report from console that the issue is with OpenCL initialization, which could be perfectly explained by the old drivers.
There is some way to disable OpenCL checks at startup with envvar iirc, @Sergey should know about it?
In the mean while, please try the latest build from our buildbot, and try starting blender from command line that way:
CYCLES_OPENCL_TEST=true /path/to/blender
In order to disable OpenCL completely you should be using
CYCLES_OPENCL_TEST=NONE
environment variable.Setting CYCLES_OPENCL_TEST=NONE fixed the problem. Can also now access the System tab in user preferences and load your demo blend files without crashing. Thanks for the quick help!
With this OPENCL environment variable set, will it prevent any features from working?
Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Archived'
You won’t be able to use OpenCL for GPU rendering with Cycles - which you probably already cannot do anyway.
I’ll close the report for now, OpenCL is rather touchy currently, and definitively needs the ultimate latest drivers (and usually very recent hardware too) to have a hope of it working…
PS: do not, absolutely not, use the GPU drivers featured by your laptop vendor, those are never really maintained and nearly always way too old. Try to download them directly from AMD website, it’s the only way to get latest one, hopefully this will fix your issue.
