Error description:
every time I rig my self made characters, their arms are always distorted after I combine them to the amature with auto weights. and It never does work well, no matter if I paint the weights it still comes out distorted.

you should provide a simple .blend file showing the issue,
I suspect that the distortion may come from a wrong roll angle in the bones .
