Random crash when starting an F12 rendering / Cycles #51196

System Information
Win10 1703 x64, GTX 780

Blender Version
Broken: Latest Buildbot and own builds
Worked: Official 2.78c and "older" Buildbot builds (e.g. one that's working is from the 7th of April)

Short description of error
Most of my production scenes crash with the latest builds when I press F12 to start rendering. These are from totally different projects and contain a bit more than the default cube but nothing special really. Maybe around ~100 objects / ~1 mio. polys altogether. (The scene I attached is smaller and not crashing Blender every single time)
The crash is more likely to happen more reliably the more objects / geometry the scene contains. I was not able to condense the problem to a super simple scene containing e.g. only one object.
It happens during the geometry "extraction phase" (?) and is not related to GPU / CPU rendering. It happens with both.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Load the attached blend file
  • Press F12
  • Blender should crash
  • Sometimes it starts rendering successfully. Then you just have to press ESC to cancel and F12 again. Usually it happens after the 2nd or 3rd try. Sometimes even on the first. With heavier scenes it happens every single time but I can't attach such a scene here.
  • If it still doesn't happen, it sometimes "helps" to switch to a different layout before rendering. I don't know how this could possibly be related but for me it reliably crashes on 2 different machines.
  • If I use an older build I can switch and render as much as I want and it never crashes.

P.S.: It might be coincidence but somehow it crashes more reliably if I start rendering when I'm looking through the scene camera.Crash_Problem_v01.blend

OMG! It crashed in my own latest build and it still crashes in the current Buildbot builds but it looks like Sergey just fixed it while I was typing the bug report!!!

I can't crash Blender with the very very latest build ( https://builder.blender.org/changes/8986 / rev. 575d6415fb )

Still investigating but it looks like the bug was fixed before it was even completely reported. Awesome!

your attached file doesn't crash using buildbot from yesterday in my case (tested 20 times, changing layouts, viewport mode, then F12, etc... windows 7, VS2015 build). But I have the exact same problem on a regular basis. As you say, it only happen on complex scenes and is random. So I never managed to give a simple working example.
Are you sure that the attached file really crash on older buildbots? It may be that this version is still too simple to happen often.
