Short description of error
Weight Paint fails when Mirror Modifier is active on Mesh

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • open the attached blend file MirrorModifierWeightPaint.blend and try to draw weights with "Subtract"-blend type of brush on the right bone "Bone_R" - it does nothing.
  • select "add"Blend type for brush and draw on the left bone (but still with vertex Group "Bone_R") then writing on the right bone
ALSO adds it on the left, although X-mirror is off in Weight Paint.
X-mirror is also off in EditMode, but there are in all cases problems, whether its on or off.
  • select "subtract" again and only the left bone is affected, although all the time "Bone_R" vertex Group was selected.

The current only solution to avoid this is to APPLY the mirror modifier before painting weights. But that's not so good as long as the Project
is in Progress. Cause sometimes you want to change some vertices AFTER weight painting. When then mirror modifier is already applied the vertices must be changed manually.
Another way to solve this would be to restrict the use of weight paints: So that the user is forced to apply the mirror modifier, before entering
Weight Paint.Would be more secure.

No bug here, this is working as expected, vgroups (and its paint tools) are data from original mesh/object, not generated by the modifier, so you obviously cannot paint on the virtual mirror side generated by the modifier.

it is a bug. cause either the possibility of editing has to be restricted, so that the system gives an error message when painting on such a side is "not supported". Or painting on that "virtual mirror side" must be implemented, cause for that side there is a vgroup "Bone_R" but the paint tool is not working on that. Internally a temporary copy of that data needs to be present for such situations. Users will always again find this as a problem, if there's no restriction and no solution for it. It is simply inconsistent to say, that this is no error. It is an error.

The Weight Paint so MUST also use the generated data from the modifier.
It is expected, that the Weight Paint affects ALL of the visible data. Parts which are not editable must be marked as "grayed" or "inactive". This is a basic rule on all software editors.
