GPU Rendering Problem #51672

System Information
Windows 10 64-bit, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

Blender Version
Broken: 2.78c
Worked: N/A

Short description of error
I've set Blender up to render with my GTX 1060 6GB GPU, but whatever I do, it seems to only use my CPU.
When I start rendering, my CPU immediately goes to 100% usage, but my GPU's performance doesn't seem to be affected in the least. The VRAM usage stays normal and the "GPU Usage" percentage is also unaffected.

I'm using Cycles, and I've enabled my card in the preferences and changed it to GPU in the renderer panel, but I'm convinced my GPU isn't being used. I feel like my rendering times could be much faster than what they are at currently.
I've been told that when rendering with CPU, it will render as many tiles as there are threads assigned, but only one tile per GPU. 6 tiles are being rendered at the same time when my software is set to GPU, so I'm sure it's my CPU.

Side note: When I use all of the threads available on my CPU, Blender consistently crashes when I try to render scenes that require a bit more power.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Not sure how to reproduce it as it happens with every .blend I start. I've completely reset the software and nothing has changed.

When it's rendering, do you have a single tile being rendered at the same time or multiple?

As I said, it renders as many tiles as I have threads set in my Performance panel. Six in this case.

Then it's definitely using the CPU , try a nightly build from https://builder.blender.org/download/ also be sure to install the latest drivers from nvidia, win10 is known to push shoddy drivers over windows update lately

I updated my Nvidia drivers yesterday and it hasn't made an impact. I'm wondering if it might be old drivers conflicting. I think I read about someone having that problem.

Also check out Window->Show console, it might display some diagnostics information there

I wiped my drivers and reinstalled. No difference.
I also just noticed that the "Device:" field in my Render panel is greyed out. I can still set it to GPU compute, but the box is greyed out... Not sure what that's about.

Wow, I just realized what the problem was... I hadn't left-clicked my GPU in the prefs. menu... I had no idea I actually had to select it. Left clicking the name of my card literally fixed my device field being greyed out and now my GPU is being used.
Thanks for the help, though!
