Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender.
  2. Make sure that the engine is set to EEVEE.
  3. Select any mesh object.
  4. Open the materials tab in the properties panel.
  5. Blender should crash immediately.

This was fixed earlier today on b48694639af. There are new builds on builder.blender.org with this fixed.

Okay! Thank you. I didn't know that there was a new version out already!

I'm not sure why this bug was closed. I get this using a build that I retrieved today, 2019-08-31.

Release is:
blender-2.81-883706395ee3-linux-glibc217-x86_64

Splash screen gives:
"v 2.81 alpha" 2019-08-31 @ 17:53. Hash: 883706395ee3

When you click on the materials tab after booting up to the "new cube" screen, the program freezes momentarily, then dies.

Hi @Michael J (Hermitude)

Please do not reply on closed bugs. Your crash happens on different hardware, this report was original targetting HD 3000. And you're machine is running on an NVidia card, where it crashes inside the NVidia driver.
Please make sure you have install your latest drivers for your GPU, and when reporting a bug please follow the guidelines. What in this case means providing the system-info.txt generated from blender Help -> Save System Info.
Also please provide if Blender 2.80 is working for you.
