System Information
Windows 10 64bit and Nvidia 970m

Blender Version
Broken: 2.79 RC2 7b397cd)
Worked: 2.78c

When new material is added using SHIFT+Q, the material naming option is not coming up - so one has to go thorough the list of long list of materials to find the correct one and rename it - avoiding which is one of the main purpose of this add on. It worked find until 2.78c (please see the attached screenshot)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Activate Matrial Utils Specials in pref.
Select an object
Press Shift+Q > Add new material
See the toolbar on the left - it's blank in 2.79RC2

Since version 1.0.2 there is an option to:

  • Define the Base name (that name will have automatically attached a number which is the amount of materials sharing the defined name)
  • Open some basic settings (the Preview active Material upon the creation of a new material)
Those options are available in Specials > New Material Settings. Tick the checkbox Tweak Settings.
The Preview Active Material will show up each time a new material is created, containing the editable name of the active one on the top.
Depending on the setting in prefrences, it is possible to have a preview of the active material with the name under the thumbnail or a list (Classic option - the same as in Blender Material properties).
Enable preview of active material New Material Settings Menu New Material Settings Pop-up Preview Active Material list Preview Active Material Thumbnail
material_preview.jpg material_name_menu.jpg new_material_settings.jpg set_name_here.jpg preview_active_material_thumbnail.jpg

The material rename of the active material is always available in the Preview Active Material Shift + Q menu entry that can be enabled/disabled in the preferences.

Hope that this clears up the issue.

Hi lijenstina,

Thanks for the quick reply and explanation of the new workflow.

The Add-on page here https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/3D_interaction/Materials_Utils
does not seem to have the update 1.0.2 update listed - that's why I thought it's a bug!

Thanks a lot for this Matrial Utils Specials add-on.
It's really helpful.
