2.79 Copy Particle Settings feature incomplete (?) #52844

The feature to copy a hair type particle system does not let you make the particle settings single user. Therefore all duplicated systems must use the same settings. This really limits the use cases for this otherwise much needed feature.

Since this is not the behavior of the emitter type particles I'm considering this a bug and maybe it was just overlooked. Thanks!

Please follow our submission template and guidelines, also read these tips about bug reports, and make a complete, valid bug report, with required info, precise description of the issue, precise steps to reproduce it, small and simple .blend and/or other files to do so if needed, etc.

We do not handle user support on this tracker, only bug reports. User forums like blenderartists.org or blender.stackexchange.com should be used for that matter.

Note that your particle system is edited, you'll have to free editing data to be able to do things like making a copy of it etc.

No I think this was just overlooked in the development. The particle settings datablock should of been duplicated and made single user with the particle system. I'm not talking about the initial count/seed/segments values that are always disabled after editing. I'm talking about all the other settings that remain editable. Roughness, children, kinks, render, etc. I can't even give the duplicated system a different material setting. Its really limited in use.

The hair with its groom has been duplicated and you can mess with the grooming individually. Just duplicate the settings block as well and its a complete feature.

There is no bug. Feature is new.
Although it is written in release notes, you did not notice there is an option for this operator.

After clicking on duplicate particle system, you have to enable Duplicate Settings option in F6 or last operator panel.

With option OFF, by default, you can only change seed of children.
With option ON, you can change anything that is not greyed out. It is no more same datablock.

My excitement got the best of me. Thankyou!

Switching that option on will duplicate all particle systems, not just the one that was selected. Perhaps that is an actual bug? But I'm just gonna go ahead and enjoy all the time this saves me

I confirm that the toggling of the option duplicate all particle systems . User can cancel action and redo the operator to avoid that.
But it is clearly not the best way to have a choice between duplicate active and duplicate all.

Should this be then set as a ToDo or it still can be considered as a bug?

You can also duplicate particle settings later at your discretion (clicking on the 'user number' button will make it single-user, effectively duplicating it). In any case, do not see any bug here, thanks for the report anyway.

You can't do that on duplicated particle systems, its greyed out. This was the issue I had when I didn't realize the option to make it a single user during duplication was in the F6 panel. If you want to leave the bug where enabling that option will duplicate all particle systems, not just selected, thats fine. But I honestly feel like several people here have never even used blender's hair system.
