I guess specifically what's missing is that Blender does not support reading and using certain image metadata (like DPI for jpeg).

This would be useful to add but would be considered a feature request:

You misunderstood me. The render result is 2x smaller at 1:1 zoom. It has nothing to do with metadata.

You misunderstood me. The render result is 2x smaller at 1:1 zoom. It has nothing to do with metadata.

2x smaller compared to what?

Blender 1:1 zoom means that one image pixel corresponds to one physical pixel on the screen. We do not write any DPI metadata when saving the file, and for example Preview will then guess the image was created for a non-retina display and scale up the image. The image might also have been intended for a retina display though, and in that case the Blender 1:1 zoom level is the correct one.

To solve this fully we need to support reading/writing DPI metadata.
