I'm on a single monitor system, someone else will have to take a look at this. @Blendify can you repro this one?

I should clarify. Blender doesn't crash upon saving the file but the file will not open subsequently. That is, unless you open a single window version of Blender, then duplicate the window and THEN move forward with opening the file that was saved with two windows. It seems that the same number of windows on two screens must be present in order to open a saved file with multiple windows on two screens. BTW...I just tried to save multiple windows on a single screen and had no problem opening the file subsequently so it definitely is a multiple monitor issue. I've used many previous versions of Blender and have never encountered this issue. I typically create multiple viewing spaces over two or more monitors. When I save the file, it would normally open with the window configuration as I saved it.

Works for me on windows 7, can you say how you have your monitors plugged into your GPUs? Somethings to try:

  • Update your drivers
  • Try changing how you plug them in. (Try putting them all in one gpu)

I'm on Windows 10. Drivers are current. I'm running four monitors plugged into both HDMI and DVI ports on two separate cards. Once again, if I open blender and then open a second window prior to opening a saved project with two windows, the program does not crash and the project opens. If I do not create the second window first, then Blender crashes before opening. This did not happen with versions prior to 2.79. THANK YOU for your support and hard work on Blender!

Please can you check the latest build appropriate for your system from https://builder.blender.org/download/ to see if the error is still present?
There was a commit that addressed some possible related issues. Thanks.

Identical problem:

  • Windows X
  • Multi Monitor
  • nVidia Titan Pascal x 3

Attempting to open a previously, or newly saved project where one or more windows are positioned on one or more of my non-main monitors causes a crash.

Thank you to Dale Metz - if I open a window on an other monitor first, and then attempt to open it works fine.

In addition, however, I am often seeing strange artifacts in the viewport which started at the same time as this bug, which may be related? These aretifact disappear if I resize the window, and do not return until blender is restarted.

Additional info. It appears for the workaround (open a window on the other monitor first) to work, I need to open the same number of windows. So if I'm opening a file which has a main window and two windows on a second monitor, I must first open that many windows on the second monitor before attempting to open the file.

Sorry for the nudge. Is there any news on this? I still have the same issue with 2.79a

Same problem on Win10, 2x GTX970, 3x Monitors.

**@lkwjunior your tip works! **Thank you very much. Now I can work. :)**Actually is there anny other way to fix it? **
At this moment every time when I turning on Blender I must use RMB and select "Render OpenGL on", after that I must choose GPU what I want to use.
Three unnecessary clicks. Its pain in the ass.

I made it. Blender 2.8 works without problems.
You must set in your GPU drivers preset, where you choose which graphic card will by used in this program.

Unfortunately, Blender 2.7 has started working, but it does not display in full screen. I used the "-p 0 0 1920 1080" command, which repaired the main monitor, but on the second screen the program remains cuted without being able to run it in full screen.

! UPDATE :)
Blender 2.79a works without a problem if I do not check the "Toggle Window Fullscreen" option on the second monitor. :)
