Win10, 2x gtx980

Blender Version
Bug in Blender 2.79 and in the latest daily build

Short description of error
Meshes with transparency enabled in viewport, and open subdiv, leads to display artefacts or crashes when toggling the subsurf.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open the attached blend file
Make sure open subdiv is enabled in your preferences, whatever the mode is (CPU, GLSL...)
Toggle the Simplify checkbox in the Scene tab to enable subsurf
Leads to the result in the picture below

Will have a look, but thing is: OpenSubdiv will be re-integrated differently in blender2.8 to support all the features (adaptive subdivisions and such). So not sure this bug will be fixed before we implement that..
