The error is explained in the manual.

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/render/cycles/gpu_rendering.html#cuda-error-out-of-memory

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/render/cycles/gpu_rendering.html#would-multiple-gpus-increase-available-memory

To know if error happens in an inappropriate context where rendered scene does not reach 11GB, we need a .blend file with the most simple scene that produces the problem.

You have to try with latest official release of Blender which is 2.79, with latest NVIDIA drivers.

Please follow our submission template and guidelines and make a complete, valid bug report, with required info, precise description of the issue, precise steps to reproduce it, small and simple .blend and/or other files to do so if needed, etc.

A guideline for making a good bug report can be found here: https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Doc/Process/Bug_Reports
