I can't reproduce this with macOS 10.13.1 and and Intel Iris Graphics 6100, and the official 2.79 release (5bd8ac9). This is the first time I've seen a bug like this reported, so we need to narrow down the cause:

  • Do you happen to have any specific system configuration related to the mouse cursor (maybe under Accessibility), or some other software that affects the mouse cursor?
  • Does it happen with older Blender versions? http://download.blender.org/release/
  • Did this start happening after you upgraded to a newer macOS version, or did it happen before that as well?

  • My mouse: Logitech Master Wireless Mouse. Standard configuration (I didn't do anything special).

  • Additional information: Beside my laptop screen I run an ASUS-Screen on thunderbold connect.

  • Before the bug happened, I'd run Blender 2.78 under Sierra (not High Sierra).

  • I changed to High Sierra, had render problems under Blender 2.78 and changed to 2.79 (see #53424 and #53582).

  • Also the "cursor problem" is there with 2.79 and High Sierra
    - > With Sierra (not HIgh Sierra) and 2.78: No "cursor problem"
    - > With HIgh Sierra and 2.78: No "cursor problem"
    - > With High Sierra and 2.79: "cursor problem"

See my current Blender version here (in my first description I made a typing error, sorry for that)

Thanks for testing, that narrows it down a bit.

So something between 2.78 affected this, we can try to find a relevant change that could have caused it. It may also be a change in macOS SDK version.

My setup:
macOS 10.13.4
mac mini late 2012
blender 2.79

Observations:

Changing the setting in macOS "System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Cursor size" from Normal to any higher value causes the cursor text "i-beam" to display normally. Changing back to "Normal" (lowest value on slider) reproduces the inverting box glitch behind the cursor. For now, my solution is to leave the system cursor size set to slightly larger than normal.

I tried to screenshot the glitch using 3 different methods: command+shift+4, Preview>File>Take Screenshot, and quicktime player's screen recording. None of these capture the glitch, and instead show normal cursor appearance.

At the Edit Mode :) Teutonic cross. Maybe there's a way in MacOS to prevent the cursor from changing?

Hi there! I make a simple add-on, which changes the mouse cursor to the default arrow by timer.
It's my first python script and first blender add-on, if someone can do thet fasterer, right and better. Please, it will help a lot. This bug in MacOS is terrible, blood from the eyes when I see a huge cross in edit mode. :)

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem on High Sierra (10.13.6), with 2.79 and also with 2.8. As previously said, a possible fix is to increase the cursor size in macOS "System Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Cursor size" from Normal to any higher value.

I used nightly build versions and built my own 2.79 to verify : the problem is the same and seems to be coming from MacOS and not blender himself as this glitch was not present in 10.12.x.

I work with a hackintosh running 10.13.6 and an Nvidia GTX970 (Nvidia web driver). My 2.79 was built with Xcode 10 (MacOS10.14 framework) and I am downloading Xcode 9.4 to check if the problem comes from the framework.

Hope a fix can be found.... I do not really want to upgrade to Mojave for the moment.

Thx

Same problem with "The Elder Scroll Online" and 10.13 : ESO

It really seems to be OSX related and many softwares were impacted (Adobe Indesign for example).

Another forum : https://github.com/SublimeTextIssues/Core/issues/2250
They say the problem is fixed in 10.13.5 but apparently not completely ;)

Ok, so it seems to be a bug in macOS for which a workaround exists, I don't think we should consider this a bug to solve in Blender then. If it's not completely solved in new macOS versions, you can report it to Apple.

Interesting informations from iTerm : https://gitlab.com/gnachman/iterm2/issues/6608

The problem seems to happen only on external display.

See below my new equipment because of Graphic-Chip-Crash of my loved 2011-Mac (I was crying).

  • Phenomen of "Input Cursor has a backgound square, input cannot be seen completely" seems to be gone.

  • Until now (1 Month) I never saw the "background square" with this new equipment, neither on internal nor on external screen.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
OS Mojave 10.14.1 (18B75)
2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 560X 4096 MB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Increasing the system cursor size a bit in Accessibility > Display options (OSX System preferences) resolves the issue on High Sierra.
