Closed, ArchivedPublic

System Information

Windows 10 Pro | Version: 1709 | OS Build: 16299.125
AMD Radeon R7 M340 + AMD Radeon R5

Blender Version
Blender 2.79a 8928d99270f

Short description of error
Opening color picker or pressing on any value slider causes blender to freeze for a short time. (about 2-6 seconds)
After that freezes stop, but if you don't use sliders or color picker for some time, they start to cause freezes again.
This bug could be related, but I am not sure...

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open Blender
  2. Click on any color picker or slider, observe freeze / hiccup

Event Timeline

Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) triaged this task as Needs Information from User priority.
  • Does it happen with with the default Blender scene with just a cube? If not, please attach a .blend file.
  • Does it still happen after File > Load Factory Settings? If not, check if you have any user preferences or other settings that are influencing this.
  • Does it happen with all render engines: Blender Internal, Cycles, .. ?
  • Can you give one specific example of a slider color picker that has this problem? It may not actually be all that have the problem.
  • Do operations like ctrl + scollwheel on the slider hang as well?
  • It happens with every scene
  • Loading factory settings does not change anything
  • It happens with all render engines
  • Color picker in theme preferences for example, or a color picker in Material properties, any color picker and slider has that problen
  • Yes, ctrl + scrollwheel hang as well

Can you attach the output of Help > System Info?

I guess this is somehow specific to the operating system setup, or mouse, or GPU drivers, .. I don't have that on Windows 10 in any case.

Thanks, nothing out of the ordinary in the system info. Some more random guesses:

  • Are you using a specific mouse model, tablet, trackpad, .. ?
  • Does disabling User Preferences > Files > Auto Save Temporary Files make a difference?
  • Are you running Blender from a network drive or other slow disk? Is file saving slow as well?
  • Try disabling and addons you have enabled to see if they make a difference.

This is a bit of a mystery. If this happened on a developer's machine we'd run Blender in a debugger and break when it's freezing to see what Blender is doing, but we'd need to be able to reproduce the issue for that. There must be some specific conditions where it happens..

  • I am using Logitech M220 mouse. I have tried to use trackpad's scroll up gesture + ctrl and it gave me the same result
  • Disabling Auto Save does not make a difference
  • I am running Blender from laptop's HDD, file saving is fast
  • Disabling all addons does not make a difference

I have another old laptop with Ubuntu 17.10 installed. I just tested Blender on it and it does not have that issue.

I’m sorry, but we cannot investigate an issue we cannot reproduce, so will archive this report until someone can give enough elements to consistently reproduce it. Thanks for the report anyway.
