2.80 Instability and Crashes in Win 10 and Linux #56788

System Information
Win 10 and Ubuntu 18.04.1

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.80-29c2c307f6e-win64 Sept10 Build
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Crash when loading 8K HDRI in Win 10 with Eevee, but stable in Cycles. Stable loading and rendering 16K HDRI in Cycles, but not with Eevee in both Linux and Windows.

Enjoyed the clear and comprehensive previous comments on Eevee stability in Linux. With the latest builds some World HDRI backgrounds remain unstable, especially in Win 10. Attached are the terminal output and system info for a crash when loading even an 8K 32-bit HDRI in Eevee with the latest Win 10 and Intel drivers. By comparison, in Cycles under Win 10 and Ubuntu, 2.8 renders 16K 32-bit HDRI's properly.

For HD 4000 graphics Intel lists 1792MB max video memory though Win 10 reports 1824MB. In Windows random crashes with Eevee can occur even with the default cube scene without an HDRI.

BTW, a workaround for the previously reported Linux instability with 16K HDRI world backgrounds is to transform the 32-bit depth to 8-bit, which gives about the same video footprint as stable 8K 32-bit HDRI's. Such backgrounds can have good shadows from an added sun light, though a built-in shadow catcher would be easier for users to set up.

Eevee is noticably faster in the past week and is becoming a joy to use.

It looks like uploading files with this report is not working, so I'll attach them later.

Doubt we can do much here, 8k HDRI 32bit is about 750MO, four times that for a 16K… that’s probably just stressing out too much GPU memory… @fclem should know better here though.

A 16K HDRI will not fit on a graphics card with 2GB memory.
