Machine: Optimus-IX 17" laptop (custom build)
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) (17134.rs4_release.180410-1804)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8300H CPU @ 2.30GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 12
Native Mode: 1920 x 1080(p) (144.006Hz)
Blender version: 2.79b (Windows 64 bit installer, released March 26th 2018)
Blender is closing/crashing approximately 25-60 seconds after startup. On startup, the console reads:
"AL lib: (EE) UpdateDeviceParams: Failed to set 44100hz, got 48000hz instead
found bundled python: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.79\python"
I seem to be able to use the software normally until it closes/crashes (i.e. rotate/move around the default scene).
I do not have to perform any specific steps to cause the error except initialising the program.

We probably won’t be able to do much here, thos ekind of issues are usually related to some specific configuration… Things you can try:
--factory-startup
commandline option) (this will ensure whether this is a userpref or addon issue or not).--debug-cycles
option and attach as text file here any error printed out in the console (do not paste it directly in comment).--debug-gpu
option and attach as text file here any error printed out in the console (do not paste it directly in comment).Added subscriber: @Metal3d
FYI, I had the problem too and used latest build on https://builder.blender.org/download/ that resolved the problem.

I downloaded Blender 2.8 and it seems to be working as intended without any unexpected shutdowns (thanks guys!). However, the first thing that happened was Windows Defender identified the .exe as a suspected threat and tried to block it from running.
2.79b didn't feel like it was crashing to be honest; it felt like it was being shut down. I'm wondering if Windows Defender is the cause of this?

I'd have to see the actual message defender gave you, but if i had to guess Windows defender has gotten into the habit of being suspicious about exe's it "hasn't seen before a lot" and given our build bots make a brand new exe every night, that might apply here.
