Serious FBX Export Issue: A hidden material will override the visible material #57765

System Information
DELL XPS Win 10 GTX 1050 latest OS and driver

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.79.0-git.33039a4602d-windows64
Worked: na

Short description of error
I experienced issues by exporting different scenes into FBX for importing into Maya. Some scenes export a shader network with textures and other scenes just a shader without any textures. Comparing the scenes will show no difference in the Blender shader networks.

The attached ZIP contains two scenes and their FBX exports with a chair extracted from an EVERMOTION Blender scene. One scene with the original material and one with the Principled shader after deleting the nodes. Both scenes will still export the identical shader network but it's different to the original scene.

In the original scene there's just one bump map used for Roughness and Normal. But in Maya there's now a second texture for Roughness. When I delete everything of the shader tree except the Principled shader (see second scene) it still exports a shader network with two textures and ignores the visible material. The scene just contains this material. There is no other sign of another material with textures. It's not a Maya issue.

To me this looks like a special and serious bug in Blender. Interesting is also that the original scene is nearly 2x bigger than the other scene.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Load the scene
  • Export into FBX
  • Import into Maya (there's a 30 day trial version available: https://www.autodesk.com/free-trials)
  • Select the chair model in Maya's Outliner
  • Open Hypershade in Maya
  • Show shader tree of selected model

Check my last screenshot for instructions.

Blender 2.79 does not support exporting node based materials from Cycles, it always exports Blender Internal materials (without the nodes), which in this file has some texture slots. In 2.8 the export system was changed to export the Principled BSDF and linked texture nodes, so this will be solved in the next release.

Thanks for the fast reply. So in my scenes there are hidden Blender material trees? Because I can't find them. Or is the scene "bugged"?

They are only visible when you change the render engine to Blender Internal and disable Use Nodes.
