macOS 10.14 Mojave
Mac mini late 2014
2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
Intel Iris Graphics 1536 MB

blender-2.79-89c2ff31d93 from official build 89c2ff31d9

Error description:
Blender crashes when opening a recent blend file and then creating a new one.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
(It crashes no matter what .blend file I open)

  1. Open Blender.app (Almost any 2.79 master build)
  2. From 'File > Open...' open a 2.79b file
  3. Now that your file is open, go 'File > New'.
  4. Blender will ask: 'Reload Start-up file?'; select 'Yes'.
  5. Blender will no longer respond...

Cannot confirm here (linux), needs further investigation.

  • Does this happen when you File > Load Factory Settings prior to step 2. ?
  • Does this also happen when you load a file that was created in that particular version of blender?
  • Does this happen with 2.79b as well?

Marking as incomplete until we have tried that.

  1. Yes, this does happen loading factory settings prior step 2.
  2. No, it load files from that version fine, but crashes when opening my 2.79b files
  3. No, 2.79b is my stable daily basis and do not crashes

Do you have UI translation enabled, and if so, 'New Data' option enabled?

And does it still happen with latest build (since the data translation issue has been fixed now)?

Can confirm on 4e3562f45a on 10.14, but it seems to depend on the particular file. This is a relatively recent problem I think, because I did not run into this issue on master 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Here are two files that do and do not trigger this bug on my machine:
crash_on_newfile.blend
nocrash_on_newfile.blend

It's not just new files, however: opening crash_on_newfile.blend and then trying to load any other file (including reverting crash_on_newfile) will cause blender to freeze.

Here's another file that does it: Cassini_Huygens_03_packed.blend

It only happens on master, however, d542e55b09. 2.80 can load new files just fine on afc4cd1e67.

It appears to be a deadlock in Blender Internal preview rendering. Even an F12 render seems to hang.

This started happening with the latest external libraries upgrade. 0276e0e

It's not clear to me if it's a problem in any of the libraries, or an existing bug that got exposed.

The latest external libraries are used in 2.8 beta too? because this doesn't happen in 2.8

It's too late now to fix issues in 2.79, since it's not a problem in 2.8 we'll consider this resolved.
