Short description of error
The text object lying flat on an axis doesn't show up in any Orthographic views. For example if you create the object on the x-y Axis and you look from the front or right/left, you can't see any representation of the text in those views. Doesn't matter which Render Engine or View method you choose. Would be nice to have at least a line or something along this way to know where the text is and to select it.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create a text object, reset rotation and position and look from the right/left or front.

This would be a nice improvement, but it didn't work in 2.7 either and would likely have a performance impact. In any case, requesting this kind of improvement is outside the scope of the bug tracker.
