System Information
Operating system: windows 10 1809
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6520G Discrete-Class Graphics

Blender Version
Broken: blender-2.80-60b930af3e73-win64
Worked: example: 2.79b release

Short description of error

I used to be able to put an armature into pose mode then select the mesh and put it in weight paint mode.
I can no longer seem to do this with new meshes and armatures.
It works as expected with armatures and meshes loaded in 2.8 from 2.79 files

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

(right click select)

2.79
add a cube
add an armature, single bone
turn on xray mode in the data tab
tab into edit mode
extrude a 2nd bone
go back to object mode
select the cube
parent it to the armature with empty groups
select the armature
put it in pose mode
select the cube
put it in weight paint mode

2.8
add a cube
add an armature, single bone
turn on in front mode in the data tab
tab into edit mode
extrude a 2nd bone
go back to object mode
select the cube
parent it to the armature with empty groups
select the armature
put it in pose mode
<< stuck in pose mode unable to select anything else >>

the workflow is different in 2.8, you have to select the armature in object mode, then the cube, when in weight paint the armature bones will be selectable.
you can use the Alt-Z shortcut to display the armatures "In front"

so why does it STILL work with old files? shouldn't the old files use the new workflow too?
