Rendering particle object in a hidden collection #59934

System Information
Operating system: win7
Graphics card: gtx 550ti

Blender Version
Broken:
(example: 2.79b release) Blender 2.80 beta hash 3700192043
(example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, blender2.8, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (optional) Blender 2.79

Short description of error
Since we don't have group anymore, Blender uses Collection, restricting a collection from rendering stops the collection to render even though the collection is added in as particle rendering type. This is one of the feature that group had but collection doesn't.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible). particle_group.blend

  • Open the blend file above render first and then uncheck the render Collection in the outliner and render again.
Even though this is kind of logical behavior but in practice it is inadequate when working with big objects. Sometimes particles settings have his own mind about scale and rotation, this will lead the artist to hide big objects that are in collection that is passed as particle collection rendering behind the camera thus it might confuse the particle system.
Note that rare is the time artist wants to render the group( collection) when pass as particle render type.

You can add a common parent collection for collections used solely for particle systems and disable that parent collection in renders (see screenshot).

Anyway, I don't think that discussion belongs here (on bugtracker). Maybe https://devtalk.blender.org/c/user-feedback is better for this :)

@ixd It seems like i didn't understand your suggestion well. This bug report is about not rendering a mesh in the collection but rendering the same mesh anyway as particle instance. To put into contest of Blender 2.7 ( group some objects and put them in no-active layer, and add the group as particle instance. In Blender 2.7 the object will be rendered anyway). Away if you have a solution please just update the blend file above and share it, i would love to learn how to it.

That's true (but I don't think it is a bug).

Sometimes particles settings have his own mind about scale and rotation, this will lead the artist to hide big objects that are in collection that is passed as particle collection rendering behind the camera thus it might confuse the particle system.

As far as I can tell, the problem is: you have a collection(s) which is used only inside particle system. And you don't want to render items which is inside that collection (but you want your items appear (and render) in particle system).

So I suggested you to change your workflow to achieve that result using parent collection. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

In your .blend:

particle_group1.blend

Thanks now i understand how to set it up. In deed this is not a bug.
