Metaballs do not display in multiple scenes #60531

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVIDIA GTX &50 ti

Blender Version
Broken:

  • 2.79
  • 2.8 Beta (14 Jan 2019)
    Splash-Blender.jpg
    Worked: Unknown

Meta ball in one scene stops metaball created in subsequent scenes displaying.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Start Blender (Default)
  2. Delete Default Cube
  3. Add MetaBall
  4. Create a new scene - Full copy
    Result
  • Metaball in Scene.001 does not display in any mode under EEVEE (2.8) or Internal(2.79) and will only display in Rendered mode in Cycles.
  • Meta object outline displays in both scenes, but not the surface (Unless rendering in Cycles)
  • Changing to Edit mode does not affect the problem

In 2.8 cycles (Rendered workbench) the two scenes show the workbench grid differently where it intersects the ball

Variants: Symptom also appears if creating an additional metaball manually in a different scene.
It appears that the first scene with a metaball wins.

This is a pretty old "issue" regarding meta-families, see https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/metas/editing.html#object-families

Hint
When working with multiple scenes, take care naming your meta objects so the base is always in the same scene as other metas.
Failing to do this will give confusing behavior (invisible meta objects).

So I guess this is a known limitation. Making sure the base for your "meta-family" is in the same scene should resolve the problem...

Closing (but feel free to comment again if issues persist...)

Thanks for the update Phillip.
I've posted a change proposal in Right Click Select.

Cheers,
Jon.

Was this ever solved? It still seems to be an issue in 3.3.1 on Mac OS
