Adding new workspaces from old startup files fails
Closed, ResolvedPublic

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Graphics card: AMD RX 480 4Gb

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80 Beta c59370bf643f

Worked: (optional)

Blender will keep shutting down whenever I click the + icon to add another workspace. Normally it would work, but if it was in sculpting mode, that will happen.

To reproduce the error, create a new file by clicking File -> New -> Sculpting. Then you can add any mode in the General tab then this will happen. Any saved files that opened this way will have the same fate Like this one

William Reynish (billreynish) triaged this task as Needs Information from User priority.

Cannot reproduce. What does 'Then you can add any mode in the General tab' mean? And what does "...will have the same fate Like this one" mean? What fate exactly? We need the report to be a little more detailed and specific.

To be more detailed, i've just recorded this video to show you the problem more clearly.
I don't think you can see the video here so i'll post a link to youtube.

I cannot reproduce that crash here. Are you using the latest build from And can you try going to File > Load Factory Settings and see if you still get the crash?

Yeah, I just downloaded the 2.8 version from the site so it is the latest build. And I did load factory settings as you said and the problem still remains. I think the software might conflict with another apps within my pc? I also tried to turn off Windows Defender but thats not the case.

William Reynish (billreynish) raised the priority of this task from Needs Information from User to Normal.Jan 19 2019, 10:06 PM

Hard to say what causes this. Will keep this open for now.

Probably the same cause as in T59314

IE old blender 2.79 workspace templates will crash blender.

@Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) I'm guessing this is something we would want to fix before the stable release?

Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) raised the priority of this task from Normal to Confirmed, Medium.Mar 22 2019, 4:32 PM

Yes, we should fix such crashes.

I can't reproduce the crash neither following the described steps (gxt 1080, windows 10 64, last blender master)

After Sebastian has merged my bug report with this one (thanks for that!), I did some more testing.

I think, the problem boils down to this:
In the "Add Workspace" menu, there are some fixed entries (which work), and some entries (the ones above the divider in the "General" section), that are populated from the startup file and cause trouble.

If the startup file was imported from Blender 2.79 or below, adding one of those "old" workspaces crashes blender.
You should be able to reproduce this with this startup file (copy it to %appdata%\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.80\config\startup.blend or the equivalent place on your OS):

Once you save the startup file in Blender 2.8 (without changing anything), there are no more crashes (at least not from this issue ^^)

I hope this information helps to reproduce the bug, and maybe even fix it.
In my opinion, it should be enough to find and catch the exception and display a warning. At least thats better than a silent crash which swallows all your unsaved work ;-)

Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) renamed this task from Blender automatically shut down when adding new workspaces. to Adding new workspaces from old startup files fails.May 29 2019, 3:37 PM

It no longer crashes now, but does nothing instead.
