Shape key from sculpt not appearing
Closed, ArchivedPublic

System Information
Operating system: windows 10
Graphics card: 2x GTX 1080ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80 - 9c68ac0448bc

Worked: Has never worked as far as I'm aware.

Short description of error
Blender doesn't recognize shape keys through sculpting being applied when there is an open subdivide or multi resolution modifier in the stack. This is problematic when using armatures. Modifiers must be applied before adding armatures. This results in significant performance loss when forced to apply all subdivide mods before rigging.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

open .blend.
Add basis shape key.
Add additional shape key.
Set 2nd shape key to a value.
Enter sculpt mode.
Make sculpting changes to the shape of the model.
Return to object mode
Change value of the 2nd shape key. Notice this does not effect the model in any way.

Sebastian Parborg (zeddb) triaged this task as Confirmed, Medium priority.

Shape keys doesn't work for me with multi res even without armatures. This is the case in 2.79 too. So I think that this might just be a limitation with multi res.

However, it does work for me if I just replace the multi res modifier with a a subdiv modifier. But I noticed that the sculpted shape would reset.

So if I took the snake hook tool and dragged out a section, it would visually change back to the basis shape. But if I went into object mode, I could see that my changes had been saved.

This is indeed not a bug but a limitation that would be good to fix once. There is currently no support for multires shape keys, only shape keys on the base mesh.
