vertex not visible/selectable if it is at objects origin

Short description of error
when a vertex is at the same position as the object's origin, it can not be selected
by clicking on it in edit mode, and its edges to other vertices are not shown.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. start blender, select cube, go edit mode, alt-M merge at center, E to extrude.

as you are extruding, the edge to the new vertex is not shown, though the bottom
line correctly shows 1/2 vertices.

once the extruded vertex is placed, you can A select all (bottom line shows 2/2 vertices)
and when you G move them around, the first vertex and the edge to the second one
show up as it leaves the origin.

february 5th's build does not show this bug, february 9th's does, but i have not
checked the builds in between those
