Eevee engine does not render shadow for meshes using displacement modifier
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: Ubuntu 18.10
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.80 beta (build from the PPA, 84992-2b7752fb00

Unsure if it's an implementation gap or an actual bug. Using the eevee engine, shadow rendering doesn't take into account the results of a displacement modifier on a mesh.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open the attached blend
  2. Select the cycle renderer, switch the viewport to render view, notice the shadow drawn along the edge of the displaced mesh (on the edge of the box)
  3. Select the eevee renderer, notice the shadow is gone

Here's the .blend file:

Enabling [x] contact shadow does the trick. Sorry for the noise.

That said, should this contact shadow option be enabled by default? I can see an argument for that basic shadow rendering to be on by default.
