This follows on from discussion with @Clément Foucault (fclem). The 'Hidden Wire' feature was originally added as a display mode for retopology, but fails in some basic ways: It's not easily possible to keep the editing mesh above the reference mesh, without using In Front, which then makes the entire object display in front.

We discussed changing the Hidden Wire feature to be a lot more clever:

  • Rename to 'Retopology'
  • Don't force use of wireframe mode
  • Always display above *surfaces* but don't display the entire object in front

'Hidde Wire' to me is almost so bad that we could remove it, unless we make the kinds of improvements outlines above.
