When selecting Toggle Maximise View or Toggle Full Screen Area, you have no option to go back to your previous View, Area or Screen. I had to quit and restart Blender.

What do you mean 'does not work' ?
I tested both on macOS Mojave and they worked here.
In your comment it is implied that it does work but that you don't know how to go back. Which is it?
The Toggle Maximise View the shortcut Ctrl+Spacebar and the Toggle Full Screen Area the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar
does not work at all.

Are you using the Blender 2.7 keymap?
I am using iMac Pro (13- inch, Mid 2012) and I also tried Apple USB external keyboard.
Both gave the same result. both shortcuts do not work.
Try doing File > Load Factory Settings and re-test.
No help,
But ..... I found out when I use the key combination, fn +ctrl + spacebar the Toggle Maximise View works.
The Toggle Full Screen Area the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar does still not work even in combination with the fn key

@Lox check your system's shortcut keys.
On macOS Ctrl+Spacebar and Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar are used to select the next/previous input source (language).
Ctrl+Spacebar and Ctrl+Alt+Spacebar still does not work.
Changed status from 'Open' to: 'Archived'
This shortcut is used by the OS.
As @jenkm says:
