Parenting partially works in outliner #63597

System Information
Operating system: mojave
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80, 1488cda1ff5, 2019 94 13

This work with a simple scene with just a few objects but not in my scene with hundreds of object. Here's the issue. I select a bunch of objects using B in the outliner, then Select. I go in the viewport, CTRL-P -> object, and either nothing happens or some of the items get parented. Those who don't, even if I try again and again, will only get parented if I drag and drop them one by one in the outliner.

By the way, select hierarchy doesn't work at all. It doesn't do anything.

Can you share the file with us, so that we can reproduce the issue? It would be even better if you could simplify the file.

Here you go! I will take the occasion to tell you I'm amazed by how responsive you guys are. I logged some bugs in Maya in 1997 and they are still not fixed!

Maybe this problem is related to selection syncing between the outliner and the viewport. Not sure.

Ok, either it's a bug or it's the way it was designed but I just realized that the ones that didn't get parented are the ones with selection icons turned off. Now the question is, if I do select something and want to parent it to something else, should it be influenced by wether the selection icon is turned on or off? Personally I think it should get parented no matter what. I did select them after all.

Also, I realized that select hierarchy does work but it only highlights the icon, not the entire name in blue. For me, that's confusing as I can't understand the idea behind it. Why would you like to just highlight something. Now if I do a select hierarchy, it not really selected as I can't do, for example, ALT D to un parent them. On the opposite, if I use B to highlight a bunch of items, they are not selected either so I can't parent them. I need to choose "select" first. It doesn't make any sense to me. "Selecting" with B doesn't really select, Select hierarchy doesn't highlight and doesn't really select.

So unless there's a really good reason for that behaviour (please explain), I would just drop that B thing to select many items. Just drag across. Highlighted and selected, same thing. And highlight everything, not just the icon so that it's easier to see what is selected. Also, when we drag a long list in the outliner, using B in present case, the list should scroll down automatically so we don't have to do it in many steps. Use MMB to drag and drop.

Finally, you can select an item and drag it on something else to parent it. Great. But if you select more than one and drag and drop them, only the first one will get parented. That doesn't make sense either.

My two cents. :-)

Usability is indeed weak here, but this seems to be outside the scope of a bug report to improve. There is a summer of code project going on that includes solving selection syncing and parenting multiple objects:
