System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
Graphics card: GTX 970

Blender Version
Broken: 036e95bb21

Short description of error

When left-clicking on a collection in the outliner it is highlighted in white and its name is also shown in the 3D viewport and status bar. This to me indicates it is the "active collection", analogous to the active object.

However, the tooltip (and collections in the list) for Add selection to active collection (Ctrl-Shift-G) says "Add the object to the collection that contains the active object". This indicates a different meaning of "active collection".

So two questions:

  • Which is the correct definition of active collection?
  • What is the use of the highlighted collection in the outliner?

Not much confusion and I come from 3dsmax. Active Collection acts like the "active" layer, where all new stuff is added, like adding a new object, duplicates, and probably some more stuff.

The highlighted collection () in the outliner is the active collection.

Cheers,
Daniel

Okay, that clears up the use of the active collection in the outliner (should have figured that out myself, doh). So the "Add selection to active collection" is misnamed (as the active object does have to be on the active layer)?
