Blender 2.8 overheats my laptop, any chance of a future CPU percentage limit switch? #65735

System Information
Operating system:Windows 7
Toshiba Qosmio with 16 GB RAM.
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 670M

Blender Version
Blender 2.8 any version I have tried a lot of them.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop which was just about the fastest thing on earth about 7 years ago, and it has never shut down due to temperature issues until I started using Blender 2.8.
But with Blender 2.8 it happens everytime after an hour or so, and then the laptop needs a long time to cool off.

I noticed that cycles in Blender 2.79 used about 20% of my CPU resources while 2.8 is close to a 100% (from taskmanager), and know that many CPU-intensive programs have a limit switch where you can set the maximum CPU load, f.x 80 % or so. Any chance Blender 2.8 could do something similar?

I have turned down bloom and AO in the viewport, but it happens regardless the tasks I am doing, and I have done no renderings in 2.8 so far.
Thus, I suspect the CPU and graphics card algorithms for Blender 2.8 is substantially different than for Blender 2.79.

Until this is resolved, I am confined to use Blender 2.79 for now.

Best regards, Erik Hoyberg.

For Cycles, in Render settings, Performance panel, Threads section, you can switched to Fixed number of threads and then set it to your liking.

For whole Blender, you can reduce amount of threads that it will use (in most cases) by using the -t n option in the command line (blender.exe -t 4e.g. to only use four threads).

In any case there is no bug here, We do not handle user support on this tracker, only bug reports. User forums like blenderartists.org or blender.stackexchange.com and our devtalk should be used for that matter.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have done extensive testing of the thread settings you mentioned, but they do not affect this problem at all. Rendering at 100 % CPU load maximum threads in cycles without overheating works fine. The problem is during modelling, texturing/painting and making shaders in Blender 2.8 (without rendering view). No matter the thread settings the computer still overheats in these situations. I see in the description of Blender 2.8's features that something called Cryptomatte is implemented, combining CPU and GPU resources, and I now suspect that it could be the GPU that overheats? That could explain why the heat spot is very localized on the computer.
I agree that this is not a bug per se, but it is still a limitation that will make it impossible for me to use Blender 2.8 unless there is a way to reduce the GPU load.
My only intention for posting this information is to do some detective work to see what is possible with the equipment that I have, and maybe it might be useful for other people as well. Blender is fantastic and I can do anything I need in 2.79 until the time I upgrade to a computer with more GPU powers, so you can absolutely close the comment if you do not think this is usefull information for the developer team. Thanks for the help.
