Cycles smoke has blocky shapes inside #67356

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: 2x GeForce GTX 660 TI

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80 Release Candidate 2
Worked: 2.79

Short description of error
Blocky shapes and lines visible inside smoke when rendering with Cycles.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create a smoke sim from particles and set up shader. When increasing density in the shader, strange blocky shapes and lines become apparent inside the smoke (rotating the view may help you see them better). These are NOT the typical artifacts from adaptive domain - these look more like shadows inside the smoke. I'm including an example file. smoke_blocky_bug.blend

The result seems to be the same for me in 2.79 and 2.8.

Please retry with the latest beta build from here: https://builder.blender.org/download/
Is the result different if you use CPU rendering?

No, with CPU the result is the same.
I tried it with the newest build as you suggested, but still got the same problem. I'm including a screen grab so you can see what I'm getting.

But you don't get this with 2.79 release?

No, my build of 2.79 is older. Splash screen says it was built on 2018-03-22. Guess I forgot to get a newer one.

I can confirm. Here's a screengrab of the result I get in my 2.79 build.

Both stable 2.8 and beta 2.81 have blocky shadows:

2.8 ACES_explosion_test_IMG.0015.png

2.81 b281_blocky_shadows_v001.png

Is there a date when this will be fixed? Otherwise, I have to go back to 2.79 for VFX production, which is fine :).

I updated the file to work inmantaflow.
Here is the result on Eevee:

Here is the result in Cycles:
image.png

The result seems to be matching.
That "lines" in Cycles' smoke is an effect of the chosen "Step Size" (0.1 by default).
It's not a bug -> https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/render/cycles/render_settings/volumes.html

Closing then.
