on linux Blender 2.80-19aa873f7002 (2019-07-23) AMD FX8350, 16G ram, GTX690 - Nvidia drivers 340.34
if i render from Lock Dev or Rendered viewport shading i have a 'CUDA error: out of memory' with a simple startup scene, i presume with 3GB is still same.
my GTX690 has 2+2GB VRam

I can't reproduce this issue. NVIDIA driver versions 398.36 and definitely 340.34 are quite old. Newer drivers have bugfixes that may help, so please test with the latest drivers from the NVIDIA website.

Since I haven't seen similar reports about Blender freezing with CUDA, I suspect it's something specific about this system setup, and the older driver versions may be it.

Also please try the latest Blender daily build.

Closing due to lack of information to investigate the issue further, we can reopen the report if more information is provided.
