Overscan only available in Eevee? #67706

System Information
Operating system: Win 10 64bit
Graphics card: GTX 1080ti

Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, release candidate 2)

Short description of error
Overscan only appears in Eevee mode, not Cycles or Workbench

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. With Eevee, you'll find Overscan in Render Panel>Film>Overscan
  2. With Cycles (or workbench), it's not there.

EDIT: I assume this is a bug, since Overscan is typically used in VFX for expanding outside the frame. And should therefore definitely function in Cycles.

Hello Andrew.

I don't know how that script works for Cycles, but Overscan option in Eevee is for this:

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/render/eevee/render_settings/film.html#overscan

You see in this scene what happens in final render without and with Overscan:
eevee_overscan.blend

Oh I see.

So there's no plans to make this function the way Overscan is understood for VFX? Like the script , which renders a section outside of the current frame?

Because I actually thought that was it's sole purpose, and that the eevee reflection fix was an accidental bonus.

Yeah, I agree, Overscan ought to be a generic thing independent from the render engine. It makes no sense to restrict it to Eevee.

This is working as intended.

Overscan is meant to fix screen-space rendering effects which can clip towards the frame borders. Cycles doesn't have screen-space rendering effects.

What you are asking for is essentially a slightly different feature, which actually saves out a larger frame, which can be useful while compositing. It may be a useful feature, but it's something else and this is not a bug.

Overscan in Eevee internally renders out a larger frame to improve screen-space effects, but then crops and only stores and saves the original frame.

Maybe if Overscan item would be inside Render Tab > Screen Space Reflections, would that be a bit clearer to avoid this kind of misunderstanding?
Edit:
Thinking about it, I think this is not only for reflections.
