System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.17134 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 431.60

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 75), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-28 15:07, hash: a49838ccb0
Worked: (optional)

When activating a knife tool, the preview dot of where the cut will begin does not show up. So i do not know if the cut will begin on a face, or on an edge, and i can't see if it snaps to a vertex, etc. I can see all of this only when i actually begin a cut.
A desirable behavior is when i activate a knife operation with "k" key.

Create a cube. Enter edit mode. Select a knife tool. Point it on a mesh. There is no green dot projected on mesh, indicating where the cut will start.
On the other hand, when in edit mode, press "k" and you immediately see where the cut will start, and if ctrl is pressed - to which place it snaps.Knife_Tool_cube.blend
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

This is missing currently, and makes the Knife tool difficult to use as an active tool.

@ideasman42 Do you have a solution in mind for this?

I am no programmer, and there might be a reason for such behavior, but i would expect that a knife tool at it's current state would work like a knife operation without a need to reactivate it after each confirmed cut.
Right now, it seems that a knife tool, when selected, is not activated. As i see it, it's functions are "turned on" after the first click, and "turn off" after cut confirmation (at least visually). I would suggest that they always be "on".
Can't imagine a situation where i would not want to see a place on a mesh where i'm going to cut).
Hope that helps somehow).
Thank you.

This could be considered a tool gizmo todo, since I assume this has to use the gizmo system.

I also have the same exact issue. If I select the knife tool, there is no green dot to tell me where first point will be. And as the original poster reported, if I press the letter K, then a green dot will appear allowing me to see where the first point will be.

@mano-wii has written on a generic snap system that will be used for tools which need to start off snapping, the same solution can be used here: D7071: Ruler: New Snap Gizmo and its use in the Ruler tool

5 years have passed, when will you start fixing the bug?

Thanks for the input.
There was a work done to implement the snap gizmo for the knife tool before: https://archive.blender.org/developer/differential/0008/0008220/index.html.
It might be worth updating the path.
