Creating a new 2D animation tab causes problems with grease pencil #67947

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: None

Blender Version
Broken: 2.8 official release 7-30-2019
Worked: (optional)

When a 2D animation tab is created, the tools are the stay the same as in the layout tab. Additionally, the grease pencil strokes are not visible in the 2D animation tab and will only show up under all over tabs such as modeling, scripting, layout, etc.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
open blender, click outside the splash screen. You are at the default scene under the layout tab with the cube, camera, and lamp. Open a new tab for 2D animation. You will see that the tools and interface do not change to the default 2D animation setting found when selecting 2D animation from the splash screen. Now try to draw with the grease pencil. Nothing shows up, whether you press and hold D to draw or select the pencil icon nothing happens. But if you return to the layout tab, you'll see the strokes you made. Browse through the other tabs and you can see the strokes; it is only under the 2D animation tab that the strokes are not visible. However, if you close Blender and launch it once again, you can select the 2D animation workspace from the splash screen and everything will appear as it should. All the tools for 2D animation will be there and the grease pencil strokes will be visible. Am I doing something wrong here?

The first thing is when you change to 2D Animation tab, you haven't a GPencil object, so when you press D you are using annotations...not GPencil object.

You need add a GP object and set mode to Draw. Also, you need make Toolsettings bar visible in View menu.

Anyway, I think we need review this tab.

@WilliamReynish Could you take a look? maybe this tab must be equal to the 2D template. I assign to you, but you can reassign it if you want.

Yes we should make the workspace the same as the template, if it isn’t.

Hey guys, I did just as you said and it worked. It was just a little unintuitive and it takes 2-3 steps before being able to use the grease pencil, but I suppose that's more of a design issue. None the less, I really appreciate the help guys thank you very much. I'll make sure to take my time and get really familiar with the UI before mistakenly reporting something as a bug. Thanks again guys, take care!

You can simply do File->New-> 2D animation and you can immediately draw. Or even quicker, you can click 2D Animation from the splash screen.

I don't actually see a bug here.
