Can't reproduce the issue with Blender 2.80.75. Did you use
File > Import > STL
to import the file?Hi. My bad. Im a new user and Im planning to migrate from C4D. The import function in C4D works from under the File > open command, old habits.
Out of curiosity do you know who is in charge/responsible for the Blender UX?
The user interface project and the developers can be seen here .
By default Blender has a filter for .blend files enabled when using
File > Open
therefore it shouldn't display any files that aren't project files unless you deactivate the filter. The reason why this functionality is separated fromFile > Import
is because the importers are all add-ons with their own settings.File > Open
has no idea what file type you're trying to open, so it can't display the import settings beforehand. For instance when importing .stl you have the option to change the scale or coordinate system orientation. When importing .fbx you can chose whether or not you want to import normals. Every format can have unique options that it doesn't share with other file formats.Added subscriber: @StephenSwaney

One way to look at it:
Import/Export is a data transfer operation from one program to another
File->Open simply means you want to mess with the contents of a Blender file
