Problems rendering old projects with Cycles - 2.80 + ctrl-left click not working #68421

System Information
Operating system: Windows 8.1 64 bit
Graphics card: GTX 970 Asus Strix 4GB 1664 Cuda Cores

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.80
Worked: blender-2.80.0 22-May windows64

Short description of error

Yesterday I Downloaded and installed blender 2.80
1 - Most of my older (2.8) version projects wont render in cycles anymore even though they were rendering just fine with the older version i used and created them. Im not sure what version it was, but the folder name is (blender-2.80.0 22-May windows64). What I mean is that is that i get the casual out of memory issues like out of memory or stopping and crashing at importance map, while the peak meter is at around 1600mb. Also, I cant cycle-render in viewport at these projects, everything is gray and stucks at updating image and crashes or nothing happens. I think that the problem might be related with the hdri 's since I tried rendering with rgb background environment and worked. Also tried remaking the hdri nodes and the first time I viewport-rendered worked fine but the second I got the same problem.

2 - Not sure if its a bug or not but i think it is. When you are at node/shader editor and ctrl-left click the action supposed to be drag and cut intersected node connections and connect with shift-left click. For some reason now it works with the right click. Please note that I have the 2.7x keymap selected. This thing drives me crazy, its like shooting in fpp games with the righ click. I tried going to keymap settings but in that category i found something like 20 actions that are named select and i dont want to mess up the whole thing.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Well I dont know ... Try to render older 2.8 projects and see if they renders with cycles while using an hdri or 2 of them.

It sounds like you already made or almost made a minimal blend file, that is, a blend file where you deleted everything you could to still have the error occur. You should attach such a blend file.

  • 2 is not a bug, it was re-mapped near the end of the beta. Try shift-RMB or ctrl-RMB instead. It doesn't take a long time to get used to, and box select by click and drag is a nice feature. This is true for right-click select and left-click select. I found out on accident, myself.

@ Joseph > Yes I know it was re-mapped but the way i see it it should be this way in 2.8 keymap. In 2.7x should be the old way. Thats why i said it might be a bug. Anyway, do you know how can i change this back to LMB ? I really dont see my self getting used to it.

@ Demeter Dzadik > Do you have this error? Have you tried to render some of your old projects? Is it working fine with all of them? I dont feel like its necessary to attach a blender cause it feels like its not related with the project or the hdri itself since its working if I start a new project and use that one. It feels like blender became less capable of handling stuff like that or that its more demanding systemwise in old projects. I havent tried yet to create another project of this scale to understand if this is the case with blender 2.8 or it just happens with old projects only. What I 'm trying to say is that even if I attach a blend file it might work on your system cause it might be better, and not work on someone else's cause its not. Some users can render 3 cubes , some cant even render 1. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Thats why I said try to render one of your old project, maybe some heavy ones and see if you have those results.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

With an attached blend file we could test it on our system in both Blender 2.7 and 2.8. There's no need to compare performance between two different systems. Like you say, that wouldn't be useful.

I think I dindt make it clear. Sorry for that. What I m trying to say is that you would probably find no problem with my file if you have a better system. I ll do my best explaining :P
If my old project required 100 rescources to render and my pc has 150 that would render normaly.
Now same project on new version feels like it needs 180 so it cant render.
If I gave you the file and your system had already 200 you would still see no difference, or if it had 100 you couldnt render anyway.
So to test this you need something thats relative to your system. The version i have problems with is 2.8 beta old files to 2.8 stable. The 2.7 files are working, at least those i tried. I didnt have time to test all of my projects. If you didnt have a 2.8 beta created project and you wanted to see if it renders on beta and not on stable, let me tell you that since I installed 2.8 the same thing happens on the beta versions as well. That means that I cant render these projects anymore. Maybe since 2.8 install overwritten 2.7 , the way blender works right now has changed and since its newer version beta versions work the same way , just a guess even though it makes no sense.

By the way the number 2 thing is getting even worse. I found some time to test some stuff and i tried to import something. How do you even navigate in the browser window? I tried left and right click and even press the middle mouse button but nothing happens. I can only drag folders while holding left click. I dont know If this is supposed to be happening in 2.8 but come on!
To my eyes this is 100% a bug. I have 2.7 keymap and interaction settings chosen and the more I 'm trying to work the more the shortcuts and interactions I used to use dont work!

I opened 4 old 2.7 projects on my PC in both 2.7 and 2.8 but in most cases I got a small performance boost. (In once case Blender crashed after a while...)

I don't know how a developer will be able to help you if they can't reproduce the issue on their side. I'm pretty sure the issue is specific to your project (or your computer).

Please let us know your CPU model, and check if you have the latest drivers for your GPU.

Also note that when layers get converted from 2.7 to 2.8, the conversion is not really perfect and often requires a fair bit of cleanup, to make sure your viewport is only displaying what it would display in 2.7 (or what it needs to display) - everything else should be disabled using the monitor icon or the checkbox for collections. Hiding things with the eye icon will not save performance. So maybe this is why you're seeing lower performance in 2.80.

But it's hard to know anything without a blend file, it's basically blind troubleshooting.

So you somewhat got that crash thing even though it should not be happening. Please notice that i said it happens so far in 2.8 beta projects so its no layering problems. I didnt have much time to test it lately , what I remember is that everything was updated at the time and all layers where on anyway. Also it not that much of a Big project to run out of memory. Anyway when I find some time ill test it and see if it works now ( I made a windows update and I will also update to the latest gpu drivers ).

My CPU is an Intel 6700K 4Ghz OC at 4.1 Ghz ( After testing I found out that 0.1 Ghz is what works best and faster without overstressing temps and cpu :P )
I use my GPU for cycles an ASUS Strix GTX 970 4GB with 1664 Cuda Cores
I have 16 GB of DDR4 ram running at 3000mhz

I really apreciate your help.

Ok I finally found sometime :) Everything now works fine even though i didn't update gpu drivers yet, so i suppose it was a windows update related problem ( its been a couple of months now that windows explorer doesn't open itself, I have no virus or anything but microsoft still can't fix my problem, however this doesnt affect anything else.). It only just takes sometime for updating lighting (2s - 5s every time) but at least it doesn't crash and works like it used to.

I still can't fix number 2 problem. Please help with that, I can't find anything on the internet. LMB doesn't anything except drag and drop in file browser or in layer manager. In layer manager it kind of selects it with RMB but it pops up a menu of options. How do you navigate? why can't I select stuff by just left clicking as it used to be? I can't even click on the arrow to show/hide sublayers. It is anoying to navigate with arrows and enter.

Sounds like you might have accidently unbound your LMB. Have you tried resetting factory settings, via File->Defaults->Load Factory Settings?

If you can't access it due to no left click, navigate to %appdata%/Blender Foundation/Blender/ and delete or rename the 2.80 or 2.81 folder.

Also, try the latest daily build.

Thank you so much! To be honest factory reset never came to my mind :P . I didn't want to go through personalizing my settings again in case this wouldn't work. I didn't know there was a temporary factory reset. So i tried it and it fixed my problem. Somehow indeed the keybind was unbounded after installing the stable version. Thank you so much again ! I really appreciate your help and your quick responses. I 'm so proud of this awesome community !!! Have a nice day !
