Background and reference images disappear in the Local view #68503

Blender Version
Broken: 2.8 release
Worked: 2.79

Short description of error

When entering local view background images disappear with all the other unselected objects because they're treated as objects now.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. New file with a cube.
  2. Load a background or reference image.
  3. Create a sphere and select it.
  4. Press / to enter the local view.

Desired effect (2.79): The cube disappears, the reference/background image stays visible.

Actual effect (2.80): Both the cube and the reference/background image disappear.

**Possible workaround:**Manually select the background image before pressing /. That's not very handy, because you have to select the background image every time and it can be covered by other objects. It certainly slows down the work. Besides, I would really prefer leaving the background images unselectable to avoid accidentally selecting them all the time.

Another workaround: Make the background images unselectable. Select the required object. Make a script/macro to invert the selection and hide the selected objects. This requires knowing how to do scripts or macros or paid addons (I used Pie Menu Editor for this). Besides, that's not really the local view, you just hide all the objects. Therefore it doesn't work with such handy tools as MACHIN3tools Focus (free addon).

Proposed solution: In the object data properties of background images add a "Display Local" checkbox under the "Display Orthographic" and the "Display Perspective" checkboxes, that would enable the image to stay visible in the local view.

Hm, since design for reference/background images changed in 2.80 this is most probably not considered a bug.

I agree though that this changed for the worse (in this particular usecase).
reg. workaround nr.1: Of course you can set disable selectability for background images by hand and you can make your life a little easier (e.g. putting the background/reference images in a collection for getting them quick from the outliner, or by scripting a one-liner that makes sure these are included in your selection prior going to local view)
Another (dirty) workaround is to put your reference images into a separate scene and use this as a background scene [this surprisingly survives local view -- this might be another bug though @dfelinto? (at least this wasnt the case in 2.79, background scenes did not draw there in local view...)]

As for the bug tracker policy, I would have to redirect this to other channels though (and close this report):
For user requests and feedback, please use other channels: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Communication/Contact#User_Feedback_and_Requests
For more information on why this isn't considered a bug, visit: https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Not_a_bug

However, in this case I will ask @Jeroen-Bakker, @JacquesLucke, @dfelinto first (prime example where we "broke" something in my opinion, still most likely not a bug...?)

Closing sine this is working as intended.

Replied on the topic of local view here: #52668#769527

Further discussion would be better suited to a design task, once a developer has time to work on it.
