Texture on active object is not visible in solid view with sculpt mode activated #68855

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10, Ubuntu 16.04
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 760

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80

Short description of error
Texture is not visible in solid view with sculpt mode activated

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Create a texture, apply it to an object, like start cube, make sure you're in solid view mode with textured color active, you'll see the texture in object mode. After switching to sculpt mode, object becomes gray.
If you change view mode to LookDev or Material, everything is fine.

Extra info
If you go back to Solid view and add a Shape Key, texture is visible again, but mask brush doesn't work. The problem with mask brush and shape keys is already mentioned #67303
I made a video about those problems https://youtu.be/Mk2w41C87AI

Can confirm the bug about texture not showing in Solid Shading -> Sculpt Mode even in 2.81 (version: 2.81 (sub 2), branch: master, commit date: 2019-08-19 19:05, hash: 74d05eb71a)

i cannot confirm this problem on linux Blender 2.80 f6cb5f5449 AMD FX8350, 16GB DDR3, GTX690 2+2 GB VRam- Nvidia drivers 435.17

IMO active sculpt object is showed in a kind of matcap to speedup sculpting operations, other selected object are show with texture

Looking at your object outlines it seems like you selected multiple objects before entering sculpt mode. If so, you did wrong thing, because you can't edit multiple objects in sculpt mode anyways, only the last selected object which becomes uncolored after entering sculpt mode too.

@slayerdude but Texture is not visible in solid view with sculpt mode activated this sentence is not true as you demonstated, texture is visible in sculpt mode.
You cannot sculpt one object showing texture in solid mode with Color Texture selected (IMO yet), maybe true. You not have report this bug, however

Slay changed title from Texture is not visible in solid view with sculpt mode activated to Texture on active object is not visible in solid view with sculpt mode activated 2019-08-26 12:27:13 +02:00

Thanks, I edited the task title, added "on active object" to make it more clear.

Well, this might be by design, it changed in ee701baff8.

However, the commit message is not informative about this whatsoever.

@Jeroen-Bakker: was this intended? (guess so, but: why?)

Will confirm for now, it is not clear to me why this change was neccessary...

To my knowledge sculptmode never supported texture rendering in blender 2.80. The reason is that the UV coordinates aren't available in the optimized data structure we use when doing sculpting in workbench. EEVEE can display it as it does not use any optimized data structure, just the regular mesh data.

UV coordinates are stored per loop, Sculpting is optimized per vertex so during sculpting we don't know have the data in the optimized form. Textures are stored per material so more and more data is needed to support this in a way that is working for the user and the developer. Blender 2.79 might have done severe tricks to get this working or did just not do any optimization. Perhaps a TODO will be a better subtask.

That sounds like this is really a known issue (or could even be closed as a design limitation that probably wont be lifted anytime soon).
I also only checked the code-side from ee701baff8, indeed even prior to that textures did not display in sculpt mode.
2.79 however did this in Textured view...
