No idea how the volume code ties into this, Alpha Blend usually suffers from the sorting problem

@Clément Foucault (fclem), I promised to not ask about Alpha Blend again, but how does this come into play regarding volumetrics [ promise broken :) ]?

This is a valid problem. The volumetrics shouldn't add more energy if the alpha is 0.
