Unusual labels of user interface controls (buttons, menus, etc.) in Blender 2.8 #69470

System Information
Operating system: Linux-4.15.0-54-generic-x86_64-with-debian-buster-sid 64 Bits
Graphics card: SVGA3D; build: RELEASE; LLVM; VMware, Inc. 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 19.0.2

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.80 (sub 75), branch: master, commit date: 2019-07-29 14:47, hash: f6cb5f5449
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
I installed Blender 2.8 from the Snap Store. Every time I launch Blender, all the user interface controls are rendered in a strange script as depicted in the attached screenshot. I am not sure if this script corresponds to a real language or not. I will also upload the output from a "glxinfo | grep -i opengl" I ran in a terminal session on my system.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
The behavior is not project-dependent - thus no ".blender" file is attached. Rather, it occurs each time Blender is started. The command used to start Blender is "/snap/blender/current/blender".

I am happy to provide additional information to help in your investigation. Thank you for very much for helping to investigate this issue.

The text is actually english, just one of the two triangles for each character is not drawn.

From the graphics information I guess you are using Blender in a virtual machine? We don't officially support that kind of setup, the OpenGL drivers are usually not stable or complete enough to run more advanced applications well.

Hello Brecht,

Thank you for explaining the behavior that I observed.

Yes, I was attempting to run Blender in a guest operating system on a virtual machine. It is a shame that this is not a supported configuration - but I appreciate your bringing that fact to my attention.

I suspect that there are many persons like myself who might attempt to run Blender with such a configuration. Perhaps the absence of support for virtual machine execution could be noted on the https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/ webpage? This might prevent the submission of unnecessary bug reports...such as this one .

Thank you again for giving this bug report your attention.

Well, the day VMs offers proper modern OpenGL support, Blender will run on them. ;)
